Paddy Holohan on UFC Dublin call-up: “I know I’m part of something so special”

In less than a month’s time, the landscape of mixed martial arts in Ireland is set to change forever when the Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to Dublin for the first time in five years. While five years ago only one Irishman occupied the card, this time around the card is dominated by Irish fighters (and honorary Irish such as Gunnar Nelson). Not only this, but one gym alone in Ireland, John Kavanagh’s SBGi, has produced four fighters for the event. The latest of these is Dubliner Paddy “The Hooligan” Holohan (9-0-1) who faces Missouri’s Josh “The Gremlin” Sampo (11-3, 1-1 […]

Cole Miller Out of UFC Dublin Main Event, Diego Brandao Steps In

Conor McGregor’s opponent for the main event of UFC Fight Night Dublin, Cole Miller, has withdrawn from their July 19th fight in Dublin’s O2 Arena. The 30-year old American pulled out of the fight after suffering torn ligaments in his thumb, and was unexpectedly absent from today’s media conference call featuring McGregor. Fear not though, as 27-year old Brazilian Diego Brandao (18-9, 4-2 UFC) has answered the call and will step in to replace Miller and ensure that McGregor still has his main event opponent. Brandao last fight on December 28th when he was knocked out by top featherweight contender […]

While many may have been surprised that Kavanagh would want Nelson to take on one of the UFC’s elite fighters and many people’s favourite to be next in line for a shot and the welterweight title, others saw the reasoning, and he explained as much to during the week. “I think they’re quite comparable,” Kavanagh explained. “He’s [MacDonald] obviously got a lot […]

John Kavanagh on MMA in Ireland: “We’re just getting started”

Head coach of SBG Ireland and the “Grandfather of Irish MMA” John Kavanagh is adamant that the sport of mixed martial arts is only going to go from strength to strength in 2014. Speaking to Niall McGrath on the Talking Brawls MMA podcast, Kavanagh spoke of how special it is to see how far the sport has come in the last 18 months. “I still when I see a guy walking down the street with a Tapout t-shirt on give him a nod because I assume I must know him,” Kavanagh told Talking Brawls. “Even when I see other teams […]
